Summer 2015

There are a few contests left that children can enter this summer. Contests vary between ages ages 3 to 13. Please read the rules and entry form carefully.

HPL Billboard Contest

Create an original slogan and drawing that promotes reading, books, libraries and literacy in the City of Hamilton! What does reading mean to you and your family?

Prizes: One (1) winning entry will be used as a billboard in the City of Hamilton.

Contest Rules:

  1. Slogans should be ten (10) words or less. Drawings should be bold, simple and colourful.
  2. Slogans and drawings should promote reading, books, literacy, the library and/or how much reading means to the entrant and his/her family.
  3. Entry is limited to children ages 3 to 13 years, who live in the City of Hamilton. Limit of one (1) entry per child.
  4. All slogans and drawings must be the original work of the entrant.
  5. Billboards (including slogan and drawing) must be drawn within the outline provided on the other side of this entry form.
  6. Entry forms are available at all branches of the Hamilton Public Library and online.
  7. All entry forms and billboards become the sole property of the Hamilton Public Library. Entries will not be returned.
  8. Entry deadline is : Saturday September 5, 2015.

Submit your entry to any Hamilton Public Library location. Entries will be forwarded to the Contest Committee. The committee will include representatives of the Hamilton Public Library, CBS Outdoor and Rocky River Sign Co. The decision of the judges is final.

Tween Writing Contest

Calling all writers! Don’t miss Hamilton Public Library’s 4th Annual Writing Contest for Tweens!
Contest guidelines:

  • Entrants must be between 10 and 12 years old
  • Entries must be no longer than 1,000 words
  • Each entrant may submit one (1) story
  • All works must be original
  • Contest closes: Saturday September 5, 2015.

How to enter:
Complete the entry form with your online submission, or fill out a submission form and drop it off, with your submission, at your neighbourhood Hamilton Public Library branch. Winners will be notified the first week of September. Winners will receive a writing workshop with a published author and professional editor on Saturday September 12, 2015.

HPL Photography Contest

Photography Contest for Kids (ages 5-12). Calling all Shutterbugs! Submit an original photo or image depicting the theme “Play”. Enter in one of the following age groups: 5-8 and 9-12. One winner will be selected in each age group.

Rules & Regulations:

  • Limit one submission per person.
  • Entries must be submitted by: Saturday September 5, 2015
  • Winners will be posted on the Hamilton Public Library Pinterest page.
  • Photo editing software may be used, but must be indicated in your entry.
  • Size restrictions: file cannot be larger than 1MB.
  • Please note that entries might be displayed in branch. Entries will become the property of Hamilton Public Library and will not be returned.

21st Annual Power of the Pen
Creative Writing Contest

Young people aged 12 to 18 can enter an original story online at: Contest closes Sept. 5, 2015.

Power of the Pen is an annual writing contest offered in partnership with The Hamilton Spectator. Teens (ages 12 to 18) are invited to submit original poetry and short stories. All participants will be entered to win and prizes will be awarded to the first and second place entries for each age group.

A distinguished panel of professional writers and reviewers will judge the entries on the basis of originality, style, general presentation and well as spelling and grammar. A first and second prize winner will be chosen in each age category - 12 through 18 years of age.

Award winning entries will be published on the Hamilton Public Library's website. First prize winners in each age category will receive a cash prize of $100 while the second prize winners in each age category will receive $25. All of the award winners will receive a copy of the Power of the Pen publication.

Each entry will also qualify for the Hamilton Association for the Advancement of Literature, Science and Art's prestigious Mailtland Banting Silver Quil Award and the Hamilton Association Young Poet's Award. The winner in each category will receive a cash prize of $200.

Each participant will be entered into a draw for the chance to win an iPad mini.

How to Enter:
Pick up an entry form in branch or submit your original short story and/or poem online to any Hamilton Public Library branch. Entries must be submitted by Saturday September 5, 2015.
Winners will be notified in December and will be asked to provide an electronic copy of their winning submission for publication and posting. For more information please call 905-546-3200 x1045.

Be sure to snap and share a few pictures of you reading at the Festival too!
